House History

Captain John McCann arrived here from Cavan, Ireland in 1820 during the reign of King George IV, the uncle of the future Queen Victoria. On his arrival here, he purchased 150 aces and in 1826 had this remarkable 3-storey home constructed.  He had served in the British military in India where an injury caused a lifelong disability. Once living here, he was known as benevolent and kind to the poor. He died in 1837.

This is an outstanding building. As you move from one room to another, think of the detailed drawings from which this house was built; the work of the stone masons visible both outside and inside; the men with their axes and adzes hewing the logs into the remarkable lengthy beams you will see here. The carpenters who brought the drawings to life. There are fireplaces on the 1st and 2nd floors. The details of iron hinges and door knobs remain in place. You will see many modern conveniences; yet, the character of the house with all its romance remains visible and tantalizing.
