House History

This home was built in 1901 for widow Kate Swails. The house seems to favour female owners, as women often owned the home during a 70-year period.  The open fretwork & turned posts decorate the porch. Heavy brackets bring attention to the extended roof which protects the brick work.

During the initial years of the 20th century until WWI, several town merchants embarked on building affordable homes for a new generation who sought work at local mills, new offices and railways in town. This section of Higginson Street provides several examples of mill housing.
